At a Glance

Ancona is unusually rewarding straight from the ship: the historic port, Roman Arch of Trajan and central streets begin close to berth 15, while the Cathedral of San Ciriaco crowns the steep Guasco hill. A focused city day can combine Roman and maritime history, Santa Maria della Piazza, the archaeological museum and a serious Marche lunch. Portonovo and the Conero coast, Loreto and the Frasassi Caves are realistic longer excursions, but the city's hills and the secure port layout make timing and footwear important.

Did you know?

Ancona has stories most visitors walk straight past.

  • 1

Ancona's name derives from the Greek word for elbow, describing the shape of its natural harbour.

  • 2

The vast first chamber of the Frasassi show caves is called Abisso Ancona after the city.

  • 3

Local tradition links brodetto all'anconetana's many fish varieties with the thirteen spouts of the Fontana del Calamo.

The area around

The lower historic centre and old port are close to berth 15, while San Ciriaco, the archaeological museum and Passetto involve climbing. Portonovo is the easiest nature-and-food extension. Loreto and Frasassi are viable on long calls with controlled transport; attempting both is poor time management.

Portonovo and Riviera del Conero

30–45 min by road

Portonovo Bay · Santa Maria di Portonovo · Wild moscioli tradition

Loreto

40–55 min by road

Basilica della Santa Casa · Piazza della Madonna · Adriatic views

Jesi

35–50 min by road or rail

Frederick II square · Pergolesi Theatre · Verdicchio

Frasassi Caves

65–85 min by road

Abisso Ancona · Monumental chambers · Gola della Rossa park

Things cruise passengers get wrong

  • ⚠️Berth 15 is central, but passengers must use the authorised secure-port route or internal shuttle.
  • ⚠️San Ciriaco and the archaeological museum require a sustained uphill walk.
  • ⚠️Frasassi needs timed admission, controlled transport and a large return margin.

Weather through the year

May, June, September and early October are best for city hills and the Conero coast without peak heat.
