At a Glance

Bari combines a busy cruise-and-ferry port with one of Italy's most characterful old towns. From the authorised port exit, Bari Vecchia, the Norman-Swabian Castle and Basilica of Saint Nicholas are close enough for an independent walking day. The seafront, shopping grid and excellent Puglian food extend the city itinerary, while Alberobello, Polignano a Mare, Castel del Monte and Matera reward longer calls with carefully controlled transport.

⚠️ Bari is a working ferry and commercial port; use only marked passenger routes and port shuttles.

⚠️ Summer heat and glare are strong along the seafront and exposed quays.

⚠️ Bari Vecchia's polished stone and narrow lanes can be slippery or crowded.

⚠️ Do not stack distant UNESCO excursions on a normal call.

Top Things to Do

Must see

Basilica of Saint Nicholas

60–90 min · Free; donations welcome

This major Romanesque pilgrimage church holds the relics of Saint Nicholas in its crypt and connects Bari with both Western and Eastern Christian traditions.

Easy

Official regional tourism information lists weekdays 07:00–20:30 and holidays 07:00–22:00; services and pilgrimages take priority.

Must see

Bari Vecchia and the Orecchiette Lanes

90–150 min · Free; food purchases optional

A dense old-town walk threads between courtyards, shrines, laundry and pasta-making doorways, linking the castle, cathedral, basilica and city walls.

Easy to moderate on uneven paving

Public lanes always open; visit respectfully, because the famous pasta street is a lived residential area rather than a staged attraction.

Must see

Cathedral of San Sabino

45–75 min · Church free; archaeological areas may be paid

Bari's cathedral is a restrained masterpiece of Apulian Romanesque architecture, with a crypt and archaeological layers beneath the present church.

Easy

Church and crypt hours vary around services and special access to the archaeological succorpo; verify locally on arrival.

Norman-Swabian Castle

75–120 min · Paid

Founded under Roger II and reshaped by Frederick II and Renaissance duchesses, the massive castle contains archaeology, temporary exhibitions and a collection of plaster casts from Puglian monuments.

Easy to moderate

The official museum page carries live notices but does not expose a simple current timetable in its main text. Older official guidance lists timed entries and Tuesday closure; verify and book through the museum before visiting.

Santa Scolastica Archaeological Museum

75–120 min · Paid; combined ticket available

A renewed museum in a Benedictine monastery and bastion traces the archaeology of Bari and its wider territory at the seaward tip of the old town.

Easy

Official museum: Tue–Sat 09:00–19:00, last entry 18:30; Sun and holidays 09:00–13:00, last entry 12:30; Mon closed.

Lungomare, Old Harbour and Teatro Margherita

60–120 min · Free exteriors; exhibition admission varies

Walk the broad Adriatic seafront past fishing boats, the waterside Teatro Margherita and Piazza del Ferrarese for Bari's best open-air city panorama.

Easy

Public promenade always open. Teatro Margherita opens according to exhibitions and events rather than fixed museum hours.

Did you know?

Bari has stories most visitors walk straight past.

  • 1

The relics of Saint Nicholas were brought from Myra to Bari by local sailors in 1087.

  • 2

Bari's celebrated spaghetti all'assassina is deliberately finished until parts of the pasta become crisp and charred in the pan.

  • 3

The Teatro Margherita was constructed over the water on piles after an agreement prevented another theatre from being built on city land.

If you have…

⏱ 2 hours

  1. 1.Use the authorised port exit and enter Bari Vecchia near the castle.
  2. 2.Walk to the Cathedral and Basilica of Saint Nicholas, prioritising the basilica crypt if open.
  3. 3.Return directly through the old town with at least 30 minutes for port security.

🕐 4 hours

  1. 1.Begin at the Norman-Swabian Castle or Santa Scolastica, depending on opening day.
  2. 2.Cross Bari Vecchia via the Cathedral and orecchiette lanes to the Basilica of Saint Nicholas.
  3. 3.Finish with a quick pasta lunch and the old harbour before returning.

🌅 A full day

  1. 1.Choose either a complete Bari day or one major excursion to Alberobello, Matera or Castel del Monte.
  2. 2.For Bari, combine the castle, cathedral, basilica, Santa Scolastica and seafront.
  3. 3.Reserve time for focaccia barese, panzerotti, orecchiette alle cime di rapa, tiella or spaghetti all'assassina.
  4. 4.For regional excursions, leave a substantial traffic buffer and confirm the exact return terminal.

The area around

Bari itself comfortably fills four to six hours. Polignano is the easiest independent rail extension. Alberobello, Matera and Castel del Monte are headline excursions, but each should be treated as the day's single major trip.

Polignano a Mare

35–50 min by train or road

Lama Monachile · Clifftop old town · Sea views

Alberobello

60–80 min by road

Rione Monti · Aia Piccola · Trullo Sovrano

Matera

70–95 min by road

Sassi districts · Rock churches · Murgia views

Castel del Monte

60–80 min by road

Octagonal plan · Frederick II history · Murgia landscape

Things cruise passengers get wrong

  • ⚠️The ship-to-gate route changes with berth assignment inside the working port.
  • ⚠️Do not assume the new berth-10 terminal is fully operational without current confirmation.
  • ⚠️Alberobello, Matera and Castel del Monte should each be the day's only major excursion.

Weather through the year

April to June and September to October suit old-town walking and regional excursions without the hottest weather.
