Ischia's icon: a fortress-topped tidal islet of trachyte rock reached by a 220-metre stone causeway, fortified from 1441 under Alfonso V of Aragon. Inside are the cathedral, Clarisse convent terraces, a Bourbon prison and belvederes hanging between sky and sea — twenty-five centuries of island history on one rock.

Ischia town's palm-lined shopping street runs straight from the port, backed by the steep Ruffella quarter's whitewashed stairs and arches. Ceramics shops, limoncello tastings and café terraces make it the easy half of any visit.

Boat circuit of the castle and Sant'Anna rocks
